WHY LA’S BUS STOPS SHOULD ADDRESS EQUITY
& CLIMATE CHANGE, NOW

Climate change is making LA hotter

The average annual temperature in LA has risen 4.1 degrees Fahrenheit between 1895 and 2018. By 2050 the number of days above 95 degrees could triple.

Low-income neighborhoods lack shade

According to Tree People’s research, low-income neighborhoods in Los Angeles lack tree cover when compared to wealthier neighborhoods, making them hotter.

Bus Riders in LA are disproportionately low-income

The average household income of bus riders in LA is under $18,000, which the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) classifies as Extremely Low Income. These communities rely on buses and their shelter.

Bus Shelter infrastructure is insufficient and scarce

In the last 20 years only 660 Bus Shelters were added to the LA county transit system, many without shade canopies, meaning less shade available for communities that need it most.

With Tranzito-Vector the City of LA will make a change by adding more bus shelter structures with better design and amenities to serve Angelenos, beginning in 2023.

WE BELIEVE THE BUS STOP IS ESSENTIAL AND SHOULD BE EQUITABLE FOR ALL ANGELENOS

We are on a mission to make change for Angelenos across the county by providing Bus Shelter infrastructure that brings shade, shelter, safety and comfort to Angelenos.

WE BELIEVE THE BUS STOP IS ESSENTIAL AND SHOULD BE EQUITABLE FOR ALL ANGELENOS

We are on a mission to make change for Angelenos across the county by providing Bus Shelter infrastructure that brings shade, shelter, safety and comfort to Angelenos, now.

Shade NOW

  • We are proposing to add 3,450 new shelters over the next 10 years
  • 75% of all bus riders from each district get shade at the bus stop
  • Additionally, overhead solar panels will power structures, making LA greener

Shelter NOW

  • We will build 5x the number of shelters than the previous contract holder
  • Structures we build will include weather canopies providing shelter from the elements
  • Design welcoming to women, BIPOC, and the physically challenged

Safety NOW

  • Our open, high-visibility shelter design considers Metro’s and LADOT’s studies on gender equity on transit
  • Our design includes contemporary, integrated lighting and a tall illuminated beacon
  • The smart shelter features earthquake early warning systems including notifications from NotifyLA & ShakeAlert

Comfort NOW

  • The accessible design is created for all Angelenos
  • Thoughtful design maximizes  air circulation and cleanliness
  • Better amenities include more lighting, phone chargers, and future modular features
  • Digital displays will show real-time bus arrivals, city information, and alerts
